It combines high-accuracy pressure and temperature measurement with sophisticated gas property calculations to create a flexible reference system for calibrating mass flow controllers, mass flow meters and many other gas flow measurement devices.

Combined with interchangeable molbloc flow elements, the molbox1+ can be used in systems covering gas flow rates from approximately 1 sccm to 6000 slm. With Premium molbloc calibration, measurement uncertainty can be as low as ±0.125% of reading.

The molbox1+ uses Fluke Calibration’s Q-RPT quartz reference pressure transducer technology for precise absolute and differential pressure measurement. The system also measures the PRT integrated into the connected molbloc and combines pressure, temperature, individual molbloc calibration data and gas properties to calculate gas mass flow in real time.

Both molbloc-L laminar flow elements and molbloc-S sonic nozzle flow elements are supported by the standard molbox1+ configurations. A special molbox1+S version was developed for molbloc-S applications requiring higher upstream pressures and increased rangeability.

Multiple calibration types can be stored for each gas in the molbloc EEPROM, allowing the same molbloc to be used for high- and low-pressure applications without manually loading separate calibration files.

Optional MFC control enables analog mass flow controllers to be set and measured directly, while RS-232 and IEEE-488.2 interfaces support integration into automated calibration systems. COMPASS for Flow software can further automate complete flow calibration procedures.

Important: The Fluke Calibration molbox1+ is no longer manufactured. automated calibration

Calibration and repair support remains available from Fluke

Gas Flow Calibration from 1 sccm to 6000 slm

One of the major advantages of the Fluke Calibration molbox1+ is its exceptionally broad system flow range.

Rather than incorporating one fixed internal flow sensor, the molbox1+ operates with interchangeable molbloc flow elements.

The overall molbloc/molbox1+ system can cover approximately:

1 sccm to 6000 slm.

The actual usable range depends on:

Selected molbloc

Gas

Operating pressure

Calibration type

System configuration

Different molbloc elements can therefore be connected to the same molbox1+ to cover several decades of gas flow.

molbox1+ and molbloc – How the System Works

The Fluke Calibration molbox1+ is the electronic measurement and calculation unit of the molbloc/molbox system.

It should not be confused with the actual flow element.

The complete reference system consists of:

molbox1+ + molbloc Flow Element

The molbloc provides the characterized physical flow element.

The molbox1+ measures the relevant pressure and temperature parameters and combines these measurements with the individual molbloc calibration data and gas properties.

The resulting reference gas flow is calculated and displayed in real time.

This modular architecture enables one flow terminal to be used with multiple reference flow elements.

Compatible with molbloc-L

The Fluke Calibration molbox1+ is compatible with molbloc-L laminar flow elements.

molbloc-L elements determine flow from the pressure drop created when gas passes through a precisely characterized laminar flow path.

The molbox1+ measures the differential pressure, absolute pressure and molbloc temperature required for the flow calculation.

Premium-calibrated molbloc-L elements used with molbox1+ provide measurement uncertainty of:

±0.125% of reading from 10% to 100% FS

and:

±0.0125% FS below 10% FS.

The specified resolution is:

0.0015% FS.

This combination is particularly suitable for precise low- and medium-flow gas calibration.

Compatible with molbloc-S

The molbox1+ can also be used with molbloc-S sonic nozzle flow elements.

molbloc-S operates according to the critical-flow or choked-flow principle.

Once sonic conditions are established at the nozzle throat, mass flow is primarily determined by upstream absolute pressure, gas temperature, gas properties and nozzle characteristics.

With Premium calibration, the molbloc-S/mobox1+ system provides measurement uncertainty down to:

±0.125% of reading.

The specified operating range is:

10% to 100% of molbloc full scale.

Resolution is:

0.0015% FS.

Measurement Uncertainty Down to ±0.125%

The Fluke Calibration molbox1+ was designed to significantly improve the measurement performance of the molbloc/molbox system.

Two molbloc calibration levels are available.

With:

Standard Calibration

the specified flow measurement uncertainty is down to:

±0.2% of reading.

With:

Premium Calibration

measurement uncertainty can be reduced to:

±0.125% of reading.

The exact specification depends on the molbloc type, flow range, calibration gas and operating conditions.

Q-RPT Pressure Measurement Technology

The Fluke Calibration molbox1+ uses Fluke Calibration’s:

Q-RPT – Quartz Reference Pressure Transducer

technology.

Q-RPTs are specially characterized pressure sensors based on the same fundamental technology used in Fluke Calibration pressure transfer standards.

The molbox1+ uses these reference pressure transducers to precisely determine the absolute and differential pressures required for molbloc flow calculation.

High-quality pressure measurement is particularly important because pressure is one of the fundamental input quantities used to calculate gas flow.

Temperature Measurement

The Fluke Calibration molbox1+ measures the PRT integrated into the connected molbloc.

The specified temperature measurement range is:

0 °C to 40 °C.

Temperature resolution is:

0.01 °C.

Fluke specifies molbloc PRT precision of:

±0.02 °C from 15 °C to 30 °C.

The molbox1+ includes onboard 100 Ω and 110 Ω reference resistors with specified stability below 25 ppm per year.

Accurate temperature measurement is essential because gas density, viscosity and other properties vary with temperature.

Improved molbloc-L Modeling

The molbox1+ introduced expanded molbloc modeling to improve the performance of molbloc-L laminar flow elements across different operating pressures.

This makes it possible to use the same molbloc more flexibly in different calibration configurations.

The system can store multiple calibrations for each gas.

For example, the same molbloc can be calibrated for:

low-pressure operation

and:

high-pressure operation.

The required calibration is then selected from the molbox1+ front panel or through the remote interface.

Multiple Calibrations Stored in the molbloc

Individual calibration information is stored in the molbloc EEPROM.

The Fluke Calibration molbox1+ can access multiple calibration types for the same gas.

This eliminates the need to manually load separate calibration files whenever the operating pressure configuration changes.

The feature is particularly useful in laboratories where the same molbloc is used both upstream and downstream of different devices under test.

Extensive Gas Support

The Fluke Calibration molbox1+ supports a broad range of gases.

These include:

Nitrogen – N₂

Air

Argon – Ar

Carbon monoxide – CO

Helium – He

Oxygen – O₂

Carbon dioxide – CO₂

Carbon tetrafluoride – CF₄

Ethane – C₂H₆

Ethylene – C₂H₄

Fluoroform – CHF₃

Hexafluoroethane – C₂F₆

Hydrogen – H₂

Methane – CH₄

Nitrous oxide – N₂O

Propane – C₃H₈

Sulfur hexafluoride – SF₆

Butane – C₄H₁₀

Octafluorocyclobutane – C₄F₈

Xenon – Xe

The availability of individual manufacturer calibrations depends on the selected molbloc, gas and operating conditions.

NIST REFPROP Gas Properties

Accurate gas property data is essential for high-performance gas flow measurement.

The molbox1+ generation incorporates improved gas property data based on the:

NIST Reference Fluid Thermodynamic and Transport Properties Database – REFPROP.

These data are used in the calculation of important gas properties required for flow determination.

Combined with improved molbloc modeling and the Fluke Calibration gravimetric flow calibration chain, this contributes to the low measurement uncertainty of the molbox1+ system.

molbox1+S for Sonic Nozzle Applications

Fluke Calibration also developed the:

molbox1+S

specifically for molbloc-S sonic nozzle applications.

Unlike the standard molbox1+, the molbox1+S is configured for absolute pressure measurement and is optimized for operation at higher upstream pressures.

Two versions were offered:

molbox1+S A1.4M

with a maximum upstream pressure range of approximately:

1.4 MPa / 200 psia

and:

molbox1+S A2M

with a range up to:

2 MPa / 300 psia.

These versions are designed for molbloc-S only.

Up to 10:1 molbloc-S Rangeability

The higher upstream pressure capability of molbox1+S can significantly extend the usable flow range of a molbloc-S.

Fluke describes a potential:

10:1 range turndown.

For example, with a device under test operating at atmospheric pressure, a:

1E2-S

may provide approximately:

15 to 50 slm

with Standard Pressure calibration and a molbox1 A700K.

With High Pressure calibration and molbox1+S A2M, the range can increase to approximately:

20 to 200 slm.

For a:

5E2-S

the corresponding range can increase from approximately:

67 to 250 slm

to:

100 to 1000 slm.

This can reduce the number of molbloc-S elements required for a broad calibration range.

molbox1+ A350K

The:

molbox1+ A350K

is a:

350 kPa / 50 psia Flow Terminal.

It is designed for use with:

molbloc-L

molbloc-S

This version is suitable for systems whose operating pressure requirements remain within the corresponding Q-RPT range.

molbox1+ A700K

The:

molbox1+ A700K

provides a:

700 kPa / 100 psia Flow Terminal.

Like the A350K, it supports both:

molbloc-L

molbloc-S

The higher pressure capability provides additional flexibility for gas flow calibration systems.

molbox1+S A1.4M

The:

molbox1+S A1.4M

is specifically designed for sonic nozzle applications.

It provides an absolute pressure range up to approximately:

1.4 MPa / 200 psia.

This configuration is intended for:

molbloc-S only.

molbox1+S A2M

The:

molbox1+S A2M

extends the absolute pressure capability to:

2 MPa / 300 psia.

It is also designed exclusively for:

molbloc-S sonic nozzle flow elements.

The increased pressure range provides significantly greater flow rangeability for suitable molbloc-S configurations.

Optional MFC Control

The Fluke Calibration molbox1+ was available with an integrated:

MFC Control Option.

This optional board allows analog mass flow controllers to be set and read directly through the molbox1+.

Both voltage- and current-based MFC signals are supported.

This capability can reduce the amount of additional instrumentation required to create a complete mass flow controller calibration system.

MFC Switchbox

The molbox1+ can also be combined with the:

Fluke Calibration MFC Switchbox.

The switchbox provides connections for up to five mass flow controllers.

It supports applications where one MFC is used to control the flow while other connected devices are measured or calibrated.

This is particularly useful in automated multi-device calibration systems.

COMPASS for Flow

The Fluke Calibration molbox1+ is supported by:

COMPASS for Flow

calibration software.

COMPASS for Flow can automate many aspects of gas flow calibration.

Functions can include:

DUT configuration

Calibration procedure definition

Automatic test execution

Reference data acquisition

DUT data acquisition

Flow control

Calculation of corrected flow values

Calibration report generation

Data storage

MET/TRACK data export

Macro-based automation

This allows molbox1+ systems to be integrated into sophisticated automated calibration laboratories.

Communication Interfaces

The Fluke Calibration molbox1+ provides:

RS-232 COM1

RS-232 COM2

IEEE-488.2

These interfaces support communication with computers, calibration software and other laboratory equipment.

Remote operation allows the molbox1+ to form part of an automated calibration system.

General Specifications

The molbox1+ has a normal operating temperature range of:

15 °C to 30 °C.

Storage temperature range is:

-20 °C to 70 °C.

Power requirements are:

85 V AC to 264 V AC

at:

47 Hz to 440 Hz.

Maximum power consumption is approximately:

18 VA.

The instrument dimensions are significant development over the earlier molbox RFM generation.

Both systems operate with interchangeable molbloc flow elements.

However, the molbox1+ introduced:

Q-RPT reference pressure technology

Improved measurement uncertainty

Premium molbloc calibration

Expanded molbloc modeling

Improved gas property data

Multiple calibrations per gas

Higher-pressure sonic nozzle configurations

Improved automation capabilities

With Premium molbloc calibration, the molbox1+ can achieve measurement uncertainty down to:

±0.125% of reading.

This represents a substantial improvement compared with earlier molbox RFM systems.

molbox1+ vs. molbox2

The Fluke Calibration molbox1+ is no longer manufactured.

For new systems, Fluke Calibration currently recommends the:

Fluke Calibration molbox2 Flow Terminal.

The molbox2 continues the modular molbloc/molbox concept while providing the current generation of Fluke Calibration gas flow measurement technology.

Existing molbox1+ systems nevertheless remain relevant for established calibration installations.

Fluke Calibration currently lists the molbox1+ among the flow calibration products for which calibration and repair support is available.

Typical Applications

The Fluke Calibration molbox1+ is suitable for:

Mass flow controller calibration

Mass flow meter calibration

Thermal mass flow meter calibration

Rotameter calibration

Variable-area flow meter calibration

Turbine gas meter calibration

Gas flow sensor measurement and sophisticated gas property calculations with the modular flexibility of interchangeable molbloc-L and molbloc-S flow elements.

The complete system can cover gas flows from approximately 1 sccm to 6000 slm, depending on the selected molbloc and operating configuration.

With Premium molbloc calibration, measurement uncertainty can be as low as ±0.125% of reading.

Standard A350K and A700K configurations support both molbloc-L and molbloc-S elements, while the specialized molbox1+S A1.4M and A2M versions extend
