DC Current Measurement up to 30 A

The Transmille 8104 provides direct DC current measurement from low currents up to:

±30 A

Transmille specifies best one-year total DC current accuracy down to:

±7 ppm

A major advantage is the ability to measure high current directly without requiring an external current shunt for standard measurements within the instrument’s direct current ranges.

This makes the 8104 particularly useful for calibration of:

  • Multifunction calibrators
  • Current calibrators
  • Precision current sources
  • Electrical test equipment
  • Laboratory current standards

Direct measurement up to 30 A can simplify the calibration setup and reduce the number of external components required.

Dedicated Electrometer Input

One of the most important differences between the Transmille 8104 and 8109 is the dedicated:

low-noise electrometer input

This additional input extends the measurement capability far beyond that of a conventional precision multimeter.

The electrometer current ranges cover approximately:

10 nA to ±10 µA

with resolution down to:

0.01 pA

and best specified performance around:

±30 ppm

depending on range and operating conditions.

This enables the Transmille 8104 to measure extremely small currents that would normally require a dedicated electrometer.

High Resistance Measurement up to 1 TΩ

The dedicated electrometer input also extends resistance measurement into the teraohm range.

The Transmille 8104 provides conventional resistance measurement up to:

1 GΩ

and electrometer-based high resistance measurement from approximately:

10 MΩ to 1 TΩ

using selectable measurement voltages from:

10 V to 300 V

Transmille specifies best electrometer resistance performance around:

140 ppm

for applicable ranges and conditions.

This makes the 8104 particularly valuable for laboratories calibrating:

  • High-value resistance standards
  • Insulation measurement equipment

  • High-resistance decade boxes
  • Electrometers
  • Electrical calibration equipment

Precision Resistance Measurement

For conventional resistance measurement, the Transmille 8104 covers values from low resistance up to:

1 GΩ

using 2-wire and 4-wire measurement techniques.

Transmille specifies best one-year resistance performance down to:

±8 ppm

for applicable ranges.

The instrument therefore covers both precision low-resistance measurements and high-resistance measurements using one integrated laboratory platform.

For very high resistance, the dedicated electrometer input extends the range further to 1 TΩ.

AC Voltage Measurement

The Transmille 8104 provides advanced AC voltage measurement capabilities.

The overall AC voltage range extends from approximately:

20 mV to 1025 V

with frequency coverage extending to:

1 MHz

on applicable low-voltage ranges.

Transmille specifies best AC voltage performance down to approximately:

±0.015 %

depending on range and frequency.

The extended frequency capability is an important advantage over the 8109 and makes the 8104 particularly suitable for demanding AC calibration workloads.

High Input Impedance

On the lower AC voltage ranges, the Transmille 8104 provides very high input impedance.

This is especially useful when the instrument is combined with precision AC/DC current shunts.

High input impedance reduces loading of the current shunt output and can eliminate the need for additional buffer amplifiers in suitable measurement setups.

Reducing the number of additional components also reduces potential measurement uncertainty contributions.

AC Current up to 30 A

The 8104 provides direct AC current measurement up to:

30 A

with best performance specified around:

±0.03 %

for applicable conditions.

This enables direct calibration and verification of AC current sources across a broad current range.

The combination of direct current measurement and compatibility with precision external current shunts provides additional flexibility for demanding AC current calibration.

Optimized for Precision AC/DC Current Shunts

The Transmille 8104 has been optimized for use with Transmille precision AC/DC current shunts.

Correction parameters for a current shunt can be entered into the instrument.

The multimeter can then simultaneously measure voltage and frequency and calculate the corrected current value based on the shunt’s AC/DC difference.

This provides direct display of the corrected current measurement.

The approach can simplify precision AC current calibration because separate manual calculations are reduced.

Frequency Measurement

The Transmille 8104 also provides precision frequency measurement.

The measurement range extends from:

10 Hz to 1 MHz

with best one-year total accuracy specified at approximately:

5 ppm

according to the current 8100 Series specifications.

Frequency measurement expands the workload of the instrument beyond voltage, current and resistance calibration.

PRT and RTD Measurement

Unlike the 8109, the Transmille 8104 also provides temperature measurement functionality.

The instrument supports PRT and RTD sensors using:

2-wire, 3-wire and 4-wire connections

with support for:

IEC 751

and:

ITS-90 coefficients

This enables precision resistance thermometers to be connected directly to the instrument.

The capability is particularly useful in laboratories performing both electrical and temperature metrology.

Thermocouple Measurement

The Transmille 8104 also supports thermocouple measurement.

More than eight thermocouple types are supported, with measurement performance specified down to approximately:

±0.05 °C

for applicable conditions.

With the appropriate cold junction measurement configuration, thermocouple signals can be converted directly into temperature.

The combination of RTD, PRT and thermocouple measurement considerably broadens the laboratory workload of the 8104.

Front and Rear Measurement Terminals

The Transmille 8104 includes both front and rear measurement terminals as standard.

This provides additional flexibility when integrating the instrument into automated calibration systems or permanent laboratory installations.

Rear terminals are particularly useful in rack-mounted systems because test connections can remain permanently installed.

The front and rear inputs also enable advanced ratio measurements.

Advanced Ratio Measurement

The 8104 provides configurable ratio measurement functionality using its front and rear measurement inputs.

Available configurations include measurements such as:

Front / Rear

Rear / Front

Front − Rear

and:

Rear − Front

This makes the instrument particularly useful for comparison measurements between reference standards and precision sources.

Ratio to Value Function

An especially powerful 8104 function is the ability to compare the rear input against a known reference value.

For example, a certified precision voltage reference can be connected to the rear input.

The instrument measures the reference and determines a correction factor based on the certified value.

This correction factor can then be applied dynamically to measurements at the front terminals.

The technique can reduce the influence of internal multimeter drift and temperature effects during precision transfer measurements.

This functionality is particularly useful when transferring values between standards or comparing a precision calibrator against a reference.

Advanced Mathematical Functions

The Transmille 8104 provides advanced mathematical functions for precision measurement applications.

These functions allow measurement results to be processed directly by the multimeter.

This can reduce external calculations and simplify complex calibration setups.

Typical applications include:

  • Ratio measurements
  • Difference measurements
  • Current shunt corrections
  • Precision transfer measurements
  • Reference comparisons

Full-Color Display

The 8104 features a modern full-color graphical display.
