A100K Pressure Range

The Fluke Calibration RPM4-100K uses the A100K Q-RPT range.

The manufacturer’s specification for the A100K is:

Maximum absolute pressure: 110 kPa

and:

Maximum gauge pressure: 10 kPa.

In imperial pressure units, this corresponds approximately to:

16 psi absolute

and:

1.5 psi gauge.

This range makes the RPM4-100K particularly suitable for accurate measurements around atmospheric pressure and for relatively low gauge pressures.

Absolute Pressure Measurement

The A100K Q-RPT supports:

absolute pressure measurement.

Absolute pressure is referenced to a vacuum rather than atmospheric pressure.

This makes the RPM4-100K useful for applications where accurate determination of absolute pressure is required.

Absolute pressure measurement is particularly relevant in:

  • Pressure calibration
  • Atmospheric-pressure-related measurements
  • Research laboratories
  • Process instrumentation
  • Reference pressure measurements
  • Transfer standard applications

Gauge Pressure Measurement

The Fluke Calibration RPM4-100K can also operate in gauge pressure mode.

Gauge pressure is measured relative to atmospheric pressure.

With the A100K Q-RPT, the maximum gauge pressure range is approximately:

10 kPa / 100 mbar / 1.5 psi.

This provides high-performance measurement capability for sensitive low-pressure instruments.

Q-RPT Technology

At the heart of the Fluke Calibration RPM4-100K is the:

Quartz Reference Pressure Transducer – Q-RPT.

Unlike conventional industrial pressure sensors, the Q-RPT is specifically designed for precision pressure metrology.

Pressure-induced stress changes the natural oscillation frequency of a quartz element.

The RPM4 electronics measure this change and convert it into a highly precise pressure value.

Each Q-RPT is individually evaluated and characterized using primary pressure standards before qualification for use in the RPM4 platform.

High Measurement Performance

The RPM4 platform was designed as a professional reference pressure monitor.

Depending on the Q-RPT class and configuration, Fluke specifies measurement uncertainty for RPM4 systems as low as:

±0.008% of reading.

The exact uncertainty applicable to an RPM4-100K depends on the installed Q-RPT class, operating mode, calibration and configuration.

For calibration work, the specification for the exact instrument configuration should therefore always be used.

Standard and Premium Q-RPT Classes

RPM4 Q-RPTs were available in different performance classes.

These include:

Standard

and:

Premium.

The Premium Q-RPT configuration provides enhanced measurement performance and supports the full advantages of the RPM4 Infinite Ranging concept.

The exact model designation identifies the installed Q-RPT range and performance class.

Infinite Ranging™

A major feature of the Fluke Calibration RPM4-100K platform is:

Infinite Ranging™.

Instead of treating the pressure monitor as an instrument with only one fixed operating range, Infinite Ranging allows the RPM4 to optimize its measurement characteristics for the actual range being used.

This is particularly useful when calibrating devices with ranges significantly below the maximum capability of the installed Q-RPT.

AutoRange™

The:

AutoRange™

function simplifies configuration of the RPM4 for a particular calibration task.

The operator enters the required maximum pressure and measurement mode.

The RPM4 then automatically configures relevant measurement parameters.

Depending on the installed configuration, AutoRange can:

  • Select the appropriate Q-RPT
  • Set the pressure measurement mode
  • Adjust display resolution
  • Configure overpressure limits
  • Optimize measurement characteristics
  • Adapt uncertainty calculations for supported Premium Q-RPT configurations

This reduces manual setup and helps ensure that the RPM4-100K is correctly configured for the intended range.

AutoZero

The Fluke Calibration RPM4-100K also supports:

AutoZero.

Zeroing is an important part of precision pressure measurement because small zero shifts can influence the measurement result, particularly at low pressures.

AutoZero provides a systematic method for maintaining Q-RPT measurement performance.

Depending on the measurement mode and configuration, zeroing can be performed against an appropriate pressure reference.

SDS™ Self Defense System

Low-pressure reference transducers can be particularly sensitive to accidental overpressure.

For this reason, Fluke Calibration equips applicable RPM4 Q-RPT modules with the:

SDS™ Self Defense System.

The SDS automatically isolates and vents the Q-RPT when it is not in use or when excessive pressure is detected.

This provides an important level of protection for the precision reference transducer.

Overpressure Protection

For Q-RPT modules up to 7 MPa, the SDS system allows the module to remain connected to pressures up to:

10 MPa / 1,500 psi

without requiring the user to manually isolate or disconnect the sensitive Q-RPT.

This is particularly valuable for a low-pressure configuration such as the RPM4-100K.

The normal measurement and maximum working pressure limits of the Q-RPT must nevertheless always be observed during measurement.

Automated Leak Check

The Fluke Calibration RPM4-100K includes an integrated:

LEAK CHECK

function.

The RPM4 measures the average rate of pressure change over a user-defined period.

This allows the operator to assess whether the connected pressure system is sufficiently leak-tight before beginning a precision calibration.

Leak testing is particularly important at low pressures because even small leaks can cause noticeable measurement drift.

Pressure Rate Measurement

The RPM4 can display:

pressure rate of change.

This provides useful information about pressure stability and dynamic behavior.

Before recording a calibration point, the operator can determine whether the pressure is sufficiently stable.

Pressure Averaging

Another integrated function is:

pressure averaging over time.

Averaging can help evaluate pressure under conditions where small fluctuations are present.

This provides additional flexibility when using the RPM4-100K as a laboratory reference monitor.

High and Low Values

The RPM4 can record:

high and low pressure values.

This allows the operator to monitor pressure variations during a test.

The function can be useful for:

  • Stability testing
  • Pressure monitoring
  • System characterization
  • Calibration setup evaluation

Freeze Function

The Fluke Calibration RPM4-100K also includes a display freeze function.

This allows a pressure indication to be held on the display for convenient recording or evaluation.

Deviation from Set Point

The RPM4 can display the:

deviation from a defined pressure set point.

This is particularly useful when manually adjusting pressure.

Instead of calculating the difference between the target and actual pressure separately, the operator can directly observe the remaining deviation.

AutoTest

The RPM4 platform provides:

AutoTest.

AutoTest can automate calibration routines including tolerance testing and data logging.

This allows frequently repeated pressure calibration sequences to be standardized and executed more efficiently.

Reference Pressure Monitor – Not a Pressure Controller

The Fluke Calibration RPM4-100K is a:

reference pressure monitor.

It measures pressure with high precision.

It does not independently generate or automatically control the test pressure.

A complete manual calibration system therefore consists of:

Pressure Generator + RPM4-100K + Device Under Test

The pressure generator creates the required pressure.

The RPM4-100K measures the reference pressure.

The DUT is exposed to the same pressure.

Its indication can then be compared with the RPM4-100K.

Pressure Gauge Calibration

The Fluke Calibration RPM4-100K can be used as a high-performance reference for calibration of low-pressure gauges.

A suitable pneumatic pressure generator is connected to the calibration system.

The pressure is applied simultaneously to the RPM4-100K and the device under test.

The DUT indication can then be compared directly with the reference pressure measured by the RPM4-100K.

Digital Pressure Gauge Calibration

The same comparison principle can be used for digital pressure gauges.

The RPM4-100K provides the reference pressure value while a suitable pressure generator produces the required test pressure.

Defined calibration points can be approached across the measurement range of the DUT.

Pressure Transmitter Calibration

The Fluke Calibration RPM4-100K can also be integrated into a pressure transmitter calibration setup.

A typical configuration consists of:

Pressure Generator + RPM4-100K + Electrical Calibrator + Pressure Transmitter

The RPM4-100K measures the applied reference pressure.

The electrical calibrator measures the transmitter output.

For a conventional process transmitter, this is commonly:

4 to 20 mA.

This allows the complete pressure-to-electrical-output characteristic to be evaluated.

Pressure Sensor Calibration

Low-pressure sensors and pressure transducers can also be calibrated using the RPM4-100K as the reference pressure measurement device.

This is particularly useful when high precision and low measurement uncertainty are required.

Manual Pressure Generation

For manual calibration systems, the RPM4-100K can be combined with a suitable low-pressure pneumatic pressure generator.

The pressure source generates and adjusts pressure while the RPM4-100K continuously measures the actual pressure.

This provides a straightforward comparison calibration system.

Automated Pressure Calibration

The Fluke Calibration RPM4-100K is also designed for integration into automated calibration systems.

The reference monitor can be connected to a compatible pressure controller.

The controller generates and regulates pressure while the RPM4-100K provides high-performance reference measurement.

This separation between pressure control and reference measurement provides considerable flexibility when designing calibration systems.

RS232 Communication

The RPM4 provides:

RS232 communication.

Two serial communication ports are available on the RPM4 platform.

These interfaces can be used for remote control, automated data acquisition and integration with calibration software.

IEEE-488.2 Communication

The Fluke Calibration RPM4-100K also supports:

IEEE-488.2 / GPIB.

GPIB is widely used in professional calibration laboratories and automated measurement systems.

This makes the RPM4 particularly suitable for integration into existing calibration environments.

COMPASS for Pressure

RPM4 reference pressure monitors can be integrated into automated pressure calibration systems using suitable calibration software.

Fluke Calibration’s pressure calibration ecosystem includes COMPASS for Pressure, which can be used to automate compatible pressure calibration equipment and procedures.

This can reduce manual data entry and improve repeatability for recurring calibration tasks.

External Q-RPT Integration

The RPM4 platform can also serve as a reference pressure monitor for external Q-RPT configurations.

This makes the system highly flexible when different pressure ranges or measurement architectures are required.

Adjustable Resolution

The Fluke Calibration RPM4-100K provides resolution:

down to 1 ppm.

The displayed resolution is user adjustable.

This allows the indication to be adapted to the measurement task and prevents unnecessary display digits when they are not required.

Fluid Head Correction

The RPM4 includes a:

HEAD

function.

This provides automatic fluid-head correction for differences in height between the reference pressure monitor and the device under test.

Height differences can cause measurable pressure differences, particularly in precision pressure calibration.

The correction function helps account for this effect.

Compact Laboratory Design

The RPM4 platform combines high-performance pressure measurement with compact dimensions.

This makes the RPM4-100K suitable for:

  • Calibration laboratories
  • Reference laboratories
  • Production calibration
  • Research laboratories
  • Automated test systems
  • Transfer standard applications

The compact design also simplifies integration into larger calibration systems.

Optional Rack Mounting

A rack mount kit is available for installation of the RPM4 in a standard:

19-inch rack.

This is useful for permanent automated calibration installations.

Optional Battery Operation

An optional battery pack allows the RPM4 to operate independently of mains power.

This can be useful when the reference monitor must be transported or used as a transfer standard between different calibration locations.
