Its modular pressure measurement system, automatic pressure control and integrated electrical process calibration functions combine the capabilities of a laboratory pressure controller with many of the functions normally associated with a process calibrator.

The ADT 780 platform is available with two basic maximum pressure ranges:

ADT 780-1K: -0.95 to 70 bar (-14.5 to 1,000 psi)

and:

ADT 780-3K: -0.95 to 200 bar (-14.5 to 3,000 psi)

The selected base range determines the maximum control range of the pressure controller.

The ADT 780 supports:

Gauge Pressure

and:

Absolute Pressure

and incorporates a barometric reference that allows convenient switching between gauge and absolute pressure modes.

A key advantage of the ADT 780 is its modular pressure measurement architecture. The controller supports one internal Intelligent Pressure Module and one external pressure module, allowing different pressure ranges and accuracy levels to be selected according to the calibration application.

Standard pressure sensors provide a one-year accuracy of:

0.02 % FS

while higher-performance sensor configurations provide substantially improved measurement performance.

Pressure control stability is specified as:

0.003 % FS

Two Pressure Ranges up to 200 bar

The Additel ADT 780 platform is available in two main pressure configurations.

ADT 780-1K

The ADT 780-1K provides a pressure range of:

-14.5 to 1,000 psi

or approximately:

-0.95 to 70 bar

This configuration is particularly suitable for common industrial pressure calibration applications.

ADT 780-3K

The ADT 780-3K extends the pressure capability to:

-14.5 to 3,000 psi

or approximately:

-0.95 to 200 bar

The higher-pressure configuration requires an appropriate high-pressure gas supply to reach the full 3,000 psi / 200 bar range.

The two configurations allow laboratories to select the pressure controller that best matches their calibration workload.

Gauge and Absolute Pressure

The Additel ADT 780 Pressure Controller supports:

Gauge Pressure

and:

Absolute Pressure

Gauge pressure is measured relative to atmospheric pressure:

pGauge = pAbsolute – pAtmosphere

The ADT780 incorporates a built-in barometric sensor, allowing the system to switch between gauge and absolute pressure measurements.

This provides considerable flexibility for laboratories calibrating different types of pressure instruments.

Modular Pressure Measurement System

One of the most important features of the ADT 780 is its modular architecture.

The system supports:

one internal Intelligent Pressure Module

and:

one external Intelligent Pressure Module

The internal and external pressure sensors can be exchanged for compatible modules.

This allows the pressure controller to be adapted to different pressure ranges and metrological requirements.

A laboratory can therefore configure the ADT 780 according to the devices being calibrated instead of relying exclusively on a single pressure range.

Standard Accuracy of 0.02 % FS

Standard pressure sensor configurations provide a one-year accuracy specification of:

0.02 % FS

FS means Full Scale.

For a full-scale-based accuracy specification, the absolute contribution depends on the measuring range of the installed pressure module.

Selecting a reference module with a range appropriately matched to the device under test is therefore important when optimizing calibration capability.

High-Accuracy Pressure Modules

Higher-performance pressure modules are available for applications requiring improved measurement capability.

Depending on the selected module generation and pressure range, Additel provides high-accuracy configurations with specifications based on percentage of reading and full scale.

This is particularly advantageous when one controller is used over a wide range of pressures.

The exact accuracy specification should therefore always be evaluated for the specific pressure module installed in the ADT 780.

Pressure Control Stability

The pressure control stability of the Additel ADT 780 is specified as:

0.003 % FS

The stability specification is based on the full scale of the installed control sensor.

Stable pressure control is important for calibration because the reference pressure should remain sufficiently stable while the device under test is read and documented.

This is particularly important when calibrating high-resolution digital pressure instruments.

User-Selectable Resolution

The ADT 780 provides user-selectable pressure resolution of:

4, 5, 6 or 7 digits

depending on the pressure module configuration.

Seven-digit resolution is associated with suitable precision pressure modules.

The selectable display resolution allows the indication to be adapted to the measurement task.

Minimum Controllable Pressure

The minimum controllable pressure depends on the installed pressure module and controller configuration.

For the ADT 780-1K, Additel specifies a minimum control pressure down to:

0.0001 psi

For the ADT 780-3K, the specified value is:

0.001 psi

The actual useful calibration range must nevertheless be evaluated together with the accuracy and uncertainty of the installed pressure module.

Optional Electric Pump

A particularly useful feature of the ADT 780-1K is the optional electric pressure pump.

With the:

ADT780-1K-EPUMP

the controller can generate pressures up to:

1,000 psi / 70 bar

without requiring an external compressed-gas cylinder.

This transforms the ADT 780-1K into a highly integrated standalone automatic pressure calibration system.

Standalone Pressure Generation up to 70 bar

Traditional pneumatic pressure controllers typically require an external nitrogen or compressed-gas supply.

With the optional electric pump, the ADT 780-1K can generate its own pressure up to 70 bar.

This can simplify:

  • Laboratory installations
  • Mobile calibration systems
  • Calibration carts
  • Temporary calibration setups
  • Production test stations

It also eliminates the need to move or connect a high-pressure gas cylinder for applications within the electric pump’s operating range.

ADT 780-3K up to 200 bar

For higher pressure applications, the ADT 780-3K extends the pneumatic control range to:

200 bar / 3,000 psi

An appropriate high-pressure gas supply is required to achieve the full pressure range.

This makes the ADT 780-3K suitable for calibration of industrial pressure instruments with measuring ranges substantially above the 70 bar capability of the ADT 780-1K.

Clean Gas Pressure Medium

Additel specifies:

Clean gas

as the pressure medium.

Clean pneumatic operation helps protect:

  • Internal control valves
  • Pressure modules
  • Pressure lines
  • Reference sensors
  • Devices under test

Suitable contamination control is particularly important when different customer instruments are repeatedly connected to the same pressure controller.

Integrated Process Calibrator Functions

The ADT 780 differs from the simplified ADT 780S by providing extensive electrical process calibration functionality.

The ADT 780 includes capabilities for:

  • Current measurement
  • Voltage measurement
  • Millivolt measurement
  • 24 V loop power
  • Pressure switch measurement
  • HART communication
  • PROFIBUS PA communication

This combination allows the ADT 780 to perform many pressure transmitter calibration tasks without requiring several separate instruments.

Current and Voltage Measurement

The integrated calibrator function can measure electrical signals associated with pressure transmitters and sensors.

Available measurement functions include:

Current

Voltage

and:

Millivolts

This allows the pneumatic input pressure and electrical output of a pressure transmitter to be evaluated within the same calibration system.

24 V Loop Power

The ADT 780 provides:

24 V loop power

for compatible process transmitters.

A two-wire pressure transmitter can therefore be supplied directly during calibration.

Combined with automatic pressure control and current measurement, this creates an efficient setup for 4–20 mA pressure transmitter calibration.

HART Communication

The Additel ADT 780 supports:

HART communication

for compatible smart process instruments.

HART capability can simplify calibration and service work on smart pressure transmitters by combining digital communication with the pneumatic calibration process.

PROFIBUS PA Communication

The ADT 780 also supports:

PROFIBUS PA

communication.

This extends the system’s capabilities to compatible digital process instrumentation and makes the controller useful in industrial process calibration environments.

Pressure Switch Testing

Pressure switches can be tested using the integrated switch measurement functionality.

During a pressure switch test, the ADT 780 can record the pressure at which the switch:

Sets

and:

Resets

This enables parameters such as switching pressure and hysteresis to be evaluated.

Automatic pressure control can make these tests considerably easier and more repeatable than manual pressure generation.

Pressure Transmitter Calibration

The combination of automatic pressure control and electrical process measurement makes the ADT 780 particularly suitable for pressure transmitter calibration.

A typical 4–20 mA transmitter calibration can include:

  1. Supplying the transmitter with 24 V loop power
  2. Generating the required reference pressure
  3. Stabilizing the pressure
  4. Measuring the transmitter current
  5. Recording the pressure and electrical values
  6. Repeating the procedure at several pressure points

This integrated approach reduces the amount of external equipment required for the calibration.

Digital Pressure Gauge Calibration

The Additel ADT 780 Pressure Controller is also suitable for calibrating digital pressure gauges.

The controller generates and stabilizes the required reference pressure while the indication of the device under test is compared with the ADT 780 reference measurement.

Typical calibration sequences include increasing and decreasing pressure points to evaluate:

  • Indication error
  • Repeatability
  • Hysteresis
  • Zero behavior

Pressure Sensor Calibration

Industrial pressure sensors and transducers can also be calibrated using the ADT 780.

The modular pressure sensor architecture allows the reference range to be selected according to the pressure range of the device under test.

This is especially useful for laboratories handling many different sensor ranges.

Large 7-Inch Touchscreen

The ADT 780 uses a large:

7-inch color touchscreen

with an icon-based user interface.

The touchscreen provides access to pressure measurement, control and process calibration functions.

The large display makes the controller suitable for stationary laboratory operation and automated calibration workstations.

Wide Selection of Pressure Units

The ADT 780 supports numerous pressure units, including:

  • Pa
  • hPa
  • kPa
  • MPa
  • bar
  • mbar
  • psi
  • mmHg
  • cmHg
  • mHg
  • inHg
  • inH₂O
  • mmH₂O
  • cmH₂O
  • kg/cm²
  • torr
  • mtorr
  • atm

User-selectable units simplify operation when calibrating instruments with different engineering units.
